chapbook: WITH HER FEET IN THE SKY
BETWEEN MY LEGS
Remember the fire light
when it swung and swelled into our room
playing tag off mirrors and walls
A sparkle in its path was
pressed by its lips
and my skin changed to flames
Deep movements
made me and you
While magic roots lapped up
and fled full
Let us hide below these secret sheets where
nobody else knows
NUDE
Drowning room of luring sound
my ears hear
nothing
The urge pounds from stinging light
Fairy-tale arrow brings blinding sight
You are a bitch in disguise
With needle in arm, it’s you I hold dear
I try to erase yet more you appear
I’m the mantis
wondering if I could be who you wanted.
FLY AWAY
A tiny child dressed in new
sat in the grass quietly
She watched others at play
They sang songs with high
pitched laughter as she looked to the sky
and the sun kissed her face
Wet streams rolled down her face
for she hated being the new
kid at school In a sky
of faces hers was unnoticed Quietly
she wished for a hello or a hi
but that day she wouldn't play
Now a teenager she loved to play
She had something about that face
The boys loved getting her high
in the backseats of cars She knew
she was known as "that kind of girl" Quietly
she got around with her feet in the sky
She moved fast from acid to x Her sky
was hazy it filled up her head Playing
with trippers that changed her quietly
you could tell by looking at her face
Sick of her life she searched for something new
but her reachable goals were too high
Now in her twenties she stood high
on a mountain breathing in the sky's
cool breath The taste was something new
The wind sang its song and played
across her face
as the pain in her chest grew quiet
Overwhelmed the Earth was quiet
with wisdom High
above a bird flew over to face
what was to come The sky
glanced to the bird that played
in its path and even the bird knew
Suddenly she too knew
as the wind stopped playing.
THE COLOR OF YOUR EYES CHANGED
Falling
fast for marbled deep blues
I stare back
at the softer view of you
that once knew
me
Changes-
they form the skin of time
but my eyes will stay brown forever.
THE NIGHTINGALE
You may ask why I obsess
with the night
and its stars
and its light
How clammy palms
of its breath moves through
and brushes my wings
it cools
it soothes
You may ask why
the crickets pull out their violins
as the smell of the night air
is hung out to dry
But wait
to lay on your back
with the grass touching skin
caresses in black
against the moon in a puddle sky
So listen
with your open arms
as I perch on a branch's broken heart
out to you
out to me
until my eyes grow tired
and the sun greets its sky
I am buried beneath day’s soft white leaves.
HE RAPED ME
"And follow the flight of a bird from a fence" Gary Soto
I think of my future
how it was crumbled
swept away by the man at his knees
If diamonds filled my fingertips
they'd be lost at sea in a sky of light
too bright for my own stars
Clouds formed my swollen eyes
as the rain poured whispering whys
and the clothesline stripped naked stared back
THE SUPPORT I NEED
I have shitty sandals marked with peace
a tee and a tank with weathered jeans
my feet trail the dirt in from the street
my hair is short
and blond
I wear little makeup
my fingers are held in rings
they tap the ash that form the smoke
as I lay in a field
of flying frisbees
Yeah I'm chill
and don't give a damn
don't know where I'm going
can't define the word 'plan'
But there won’t be a bra that's holding me
I'd rather it be his hands.
JEALOUS SORROW SKY,
(To be read aloud for sound)
why
why do
you
do what you
do when I
don't do
do what
you always
want
me to
do [I hear the pattern of
do your
do helpless eyes]
do
do
do
SHADOW
Let's walk through the trees
near the empty swings
where cigarettes turn to ash
and night diamonds peer through open clouds
Let the wind seep in its trance
to slide up your lap
upon fingers of antique rings
and gaze at the sun that sparkles dead grass
I long for your body
stripped naked from light
Let me out of this dark looking glass.
BROKEN LINES
Yeah so she’s a little edgy
and maybe
too passive and easily
distracted
She whines about the tough times
but tries to make
it all seem
okay
But before she realizes
what’s down can be up
it always seems a little bit better
within stanzas of chosen letters
but the line always breaks.
